(14,558 posts)Many years ago, when I was still a child, I heard kids at school talking about Catechism and Bar Mitzvahs. So, I went home and asked my father about God and about which religion I should follow.
Dad looked thoughtful and replied that this was a path I'd have to find on my own because he didn't feel comfortable telling me what religion I should follow. He suggested I read a lot of things and think it through.
I nodded, and he went on to say that someday I might join a church, and that if I did, they might ask me for money.
In fact, he said, they might ask you for a LOT of money. It is called a tithe.
When they do ask, he continued, you should take the paper money out of your wallet and throw it up in the air. Tell the person asking that anything that stays up in the air is God's and anything that falls back to the ground is yours.
I have always thought that funny, and have used it several times. Yet if there is a charity or cause in which I believe, I do donate. I just don't think these right-wing evangelical 'christians' are in tune at all with the Christian philosophy as set forth in Matthew 5-7. As a consequence, I push the ol' BULLSHIT button whenever a 'christian' tries to spout that shit at me.
