1. Did he walk away from his medical career, or was he 'shown the door'?

I'm still VERY suspicious about why he retired so young, from such a critical medical specialty, and walked away completely. Most people with his touted skills would have at least done some consulting or teaching. It raises a lot of questions, in my mind.

Disclaimer: In my previous life, I investigated physician's credentials, for a living. Every 3 years I had to review and verify their license to practice, DEA, hospital affiliations, malpractice insurance coverage, and malpractice history. I know that neurosurgery is a specialty that gets hit with a lot of malpractice suits. They were some of the roughest for me to have to read.
