He was authoritarian.

Authoritarianism can be associated with communism or fascism.

Democratic institutions and the rule of law are the keys to a free society.

We have democratic institutions to some extent, but our president is, unfortunately not elected by popular vote. That is just one example of a less than democratic institution in our country. We try to enforce the rule of law. But we still have to deal with police brutality and an oligarchy that from time to time avoids respecting the rule of law.
