He's always been a musician as far as I know. He's a truly great songwriter whose songs are sometimes funny, sometimes poignant.

Yes, he had a hit with "Dead Skunk" in '73 and was on M*A*S*H. He was also the priest in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, the gynecologist in Knocked Up (for which he also wrote the music), and was on Judd Apatow's TV show, Undeclared.

I've been a fan since I first saw him on David Letterman's morning show in the summer of 1980.

Oh, and his father was a well-known columnist & editor at LIFE Magazine.
