(5,961 posts)Who would I hire to direct a film right now? Not Steven Speilberg - or Scorcese.
It's hard to say. David O. Russell seems to work with a lot of the same cast again and again. I really enjoyed The Fighter; American Hustle not-so-much. Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Alexander Payne, and the Coen Bros all do well in their niche. I'm not a huge Ang Lee fan, but I know many would argue he is the best. Lee Daniels has done interesting work. Iñárritu has done impressive work.
If I had a good script, and $75 M on the line, I'd probably go sign Ron Howard. He's reliably good; actors seem to like working with him; and he has a pretty solid body of work. If I am making a prestige film, and my goal is to win an Oscar (TM), then probably I get Alexander Payne inasmuch as I enjoy his films most out of the current crop of prestige directors.
