I have read that taking vitamin B1 is a repellent to them (and to mosquitos as well!). I used to use it often when I did more camping in summer, and had relatively little problem with either. Can't swear that there was a correlation, but can't really say that there isn't, either. (Could be I just don't taste good to them, IDK) 'Sworth a try, maybe.
