(1,303 posts)49. I am facing the same thing with my Peagle. (Peke and Beagle)
He had been a warehouse dog that I took to teach the Collie I had rescued that people can be loving and trusted. The collie was afraid of everything. He learned what love was and was with us until we guessed he was about 15. Now the Peagle is about 18, is almost blind, can't hear too good, has fatty tumors all over his body but still has a saucy attitude even though he has slowed way down. Sometimes when he is sleeping so soundly, I am afraid to check him for fear he is not just sleeping.
I am 75 and hubby is 83 and neither of us are in good health so Sam will be our last fur child. It would be unfair to adopt another one, teach it to trust us and then leave it.
Such is life.
