(92,994 posts)A trip to the nearest actual town with stores is a 65 mile round trip, planning is essential. Going to the city, the county seat of the next county over has most of the big box stores that are in the region. That's a 130 mile round trip which is still shorter than when I was up in the mountains, that was 110 miles one way to the same city, the next closest was 120 miles one way and was in another state. A reliable vehicle is mandatory, and knowing your neighbors.
And I like it because I don't hear sirens, jets except in rare occasions and we don't have street lights. The sky, when not cloudy is amazing and a little daunting at night but I catch glimpses of the ISS when it goes by and meteor when there isn't a shower, satellites and stuff that moves around in ways that could make you think it wasn't built by humans. And that's what I love about, and nobody "just stops by" because you have to make a concerted effort to get here.
The drawback is all the tourists who get lost and *rumpers who live around here.
