but the feremented kind, not the chewed and spit out kind. The fermented ones pretty much follow the barley based beer, maize and possibly other local grains sprouted to release the sugars, dried, ground, and mixed with hot water and allowed to ferment for a week or so. The stuff I've seen in videos comes in a lot of colors, so they're likely sweetened with fruit flavors. Chicha will also get you hammered if you drink enough of it, it can be as potent as homebrew, my homebrew delivering a solid kick.
Still, the ognorance quoted in the OP was absolutely staggering. Even people who don't brew it have a hazy idea where it comes from.
