I live in a rural area and our power is usually out an hour to a day several times a year. I had a portable generator which powered my fridge, freezer, well pump, small appliances (microwave, computers, etc). A couple years ago it quit and I decided to sell it. I did get tired running all the extension cables, the noise and keeping it filled with gas. What I do now is the following:

I save empty plastic milk containers, fill with water and store in my freezer (not the kitchen freezer, but a separate meat freezer which is not always full). Over time it is packed solid with ice filled bottles. This has the advantage of making the freezer more efficient also. When power is out, I take some frozen bottles and put them in my kitchen refrigerator's freezer and a couple in the regular compartment. As the bottles are melting (usually after 48 hours or more) I replace with more bottles from my meat freezer which should remain frozen for several days.

I fill 5 gallon buckets with lids with water plus a bit of bleach. These sit out in my garage and are used for flushing the toilet.

I keep two portable auto jumpers charged. One is always carried in the car. They have USB outlets and are used to recharge my phone and run an IPAD, so I'm connected to the outside world.

My home is passive solar so in the Winter I just fire up the wood stove if there is no sunshine.

Of course I have flashlights and a supply of batteries.

I keep a case of bottled water for drinking and brushing my teeth.

A few years ago we had no power for over 4 days. My son, his girlfriend and their dog came to my place to stay warm.

I do miss my morning coffee, but I have plenty of rum and coke to take its place.
