(54,277 posts)Our two girls were born in Germany, grew up speaking German as their native language, went to the States at first on academic exchange programs. Due to their parents' two nationalities, they are both German and American citizens.
One is now an assistant buyer for an important chain of stores based in Manhattan, makes very little money (for New York City), but loves living there, and pays her own way in the brutal fashion field, has tons of friends and has a good time.
The other dared to go to school halfway around the planet, exactly twelve time zones from us, then completed college and law school in the States, doing very un-traditional things during her summers. While other law students were clerking for prestige firms, she joined the UN War Crimes Tribunal in Sierra Leone. When she graduated, jobs were not to be had in the States, so she applied for a position with the German arm of a British law firm and has been so successful in international law these past three years that headhunters are practically camped out on her door.
