(62,342 posts)Oldest daughter was kicked up to the vice-president position in an insurance company about a year ago. Married, no kids but some huge dreams.
Youngest is married and right now a stay at home mom for one boy. When she worked she was one terrific biology/ physics teacher with some recognition. Her husband is a true up and comer in his company (fortune 500 company).
But the real surprise for us has been a young man we have been mentoring and tutoring since he was 8. He is completing his junior year in high school as a page in the Iowa state senate. This is a hard position to get. He bowled them over in his interview. I know our local politicians and they say he is one of the nicest young men they have ever met.
When we started working with him, I would have been happy if he graduated high school. When we started with him he could barely read.
His mom and dad were immigrants from Mexico. He literally came across the border in mom's uterus just before he was born.
He got his first A in sixth grade. His grin was so big he could barely fit through the door. 7th and 8th grades he continued success. In 9th grade, he was so busy that we suspended tutoring to an as needed basis. That year he joined the speech club and won a state competition. He joined chorus and has been chosen as an all stater. This summer he goes to Europe to tour with an all state group. His grades are in the 3.5 range and he is planning on taking some college courses next year. He had the 2nd lead in the school play and is part of a hilarious Improv group at school.
His mom and dad are stunned by his achievements. We are stunned. Randy himself is quite eager to take on more. I so hope I get a few more years to see where he goes.
Thank you for letting me brag a bit, cause I am really proud of this group.
oooo - one more - another boy we are working with - his reading level has gone up six years in the last year - he'll be in 7th next year and his confidence is soaring! His dad was so worried and now he is so proud. Another immigrant family.
