4. String theory, at least what little of it I understand


with relative clarity, predicts, in fact demands the existence of at least ten dimensions of space and one of time. Perhaps our universe came into being as a result of a collision between two branes carrying other universes, ripping a hole in spacetime.

Brian Greene's "The Hidden Reality" is a terrific read on the subject of multiple universes, string theory and generally mind-roasting science at the cutting edge.
