They weren't looking to create some kind of international incident. But they did have a great time lording their power over me before releasing me back to my "capitalist hell" in West Berlin.
At the end of the day, they were petty little functionaries, looking to bring some fun into their dreary routine, not unlike some cops I have run into in rural Alabama or Texas. These guys were a few degrees removed from the ones who used to stand in a courtyard in Potsdam with Putin and joke around as they lined the most serious dissidents up against a wall and shot them. I saw that wall way later, after the DDR had disappeared into the garbage can of history. That villa is still there, and the wall still has the bullet holes in it.
