So apparently no metal detectors at this event. Another poster said the woman was wearing flip flops in the photo she saw of her, which means the thrower carried in the Puma brand soccer cleat.

The Bush event was, as you said, a different scenario. The man had been wearing the shoe, it was soft, and in his culture throwing a shoe in disgust was an accepted form of political disagreement.

It's sounding now like mental problems may be behind the thrower's action.
