I have loved the work of Hemingway since college and he has long been my favorite author. A Movable Feast is one of the most beautifully written books l have ever read.

Hemingway was a self-destructive alcoholic and he, like most alcoholics cause deep hurt to the people who love them most. I think he had an awareness of the pain he caused people, which only caused more self-loathing and made him drink more. And yes, I agree that the person they lie the most to is themselves.

The man had an enormous gift and that is what needs to be honored. His disastrous personal life is what made him a fragile and flawed human being, like so many others who struggle from one day to the next.
