I went and checked my license and I do have the gold star. I had moved up to MA for a couple of years. I had to show them a whole bunch of documents to get a license up there. When I got back to FL in 2014 I renewed in person with my BC and utility bills. I also went and got a new passport last year. That was very easy to do at the courthouse. I got there early and was in and out in about 15 minutes. I guess if I had not moved outside of FL I would probably not have known about this until reading your post. Apparently traveling to Europe is about to get a little more difficult for Americans too.
