He bought the land to build a golf course, but the neighbors stopped him, so he donated the land to the state as a park. No doubt he took a deduction bigger than the 2 million he paid for it.

When the state wouldn't take proper care of it (he donated no money for upkeep) he wanted it back. NY told him to shove it.
