2. I don't know how a Roku could work without an internet connection

Which the home should have. I think your tv is now a dumb tv. But it may work with a Roku or Fire and an internet connection, but I doubt it. Otherwise you can get a new tv, which are really cheap now. If you get another smart tv you won't need a Roku.
