I'm considered too expensive to hire for the amount of research funding available, at least in academia. If I had to give anyone advice, I'd say get a STEM background for a base of knowledge and future flexibility. Consider focusing on a career (that you like) that has people coming to you. A people-oriented, health-service type career. For example, people like their pets, so veterinarians are always in some kind of demand.
