However, I have heard that metamucil, when taken without any breaks, ends up being an agent of constipation.

So maybe do the m. for two days, then take two days off?

Cherry juice or prune juice taken in moderation should be a decent and healthy substitute for the metamucil on the days you don't take it. (Plus if you suffer from gout, cherry juice is wonderful at purging the gout from your system.)
