Stomach acid destroys all the cold viruses and recycles the proteins from the dead tissue and white blood cells. Spitting just gets rid of the whole business.

What puts mucus into the lungs isn't regurgitation, it's post nasal drip. Sitting up increases it. Sitting up also allows sinuses to stay a bit more open so you can breathe

It seems like gallons of glop, but it's only a few tablespoons full.

If you do everything you can to cure a cold, it will only last a week. If you do nothing, the bastard will hang on for seven days.

How you cope with a cold is your own business and you need to do what you think keeps you the most comfortable. My favorite thing is sterile saline warmed just above body temperature and pushed into a nose full of blocked sinuses. It should be 104F or less. It's really good at unblocking things so you can blow all the crud out.
