2. Some people do to insure against bad ones

If you are using a good source for bulbs it's probably not necessary, but if you are just picking them up at the big box home improvement store, then it's not a bad idea if you're concerned about coverage the first year.

I like to plant bulbs in random patterns so that if a few don't come up it's not a big deal. In subsequent years they are going to be less uniform anyway.
