Odd occurrence. [View all]

I have a pale pink "New Dawn" climber that has been in the same place for years. It hasn't bloomed yet this season, but has plenty of buds.

Now, it seems to have thrown off a sport that is dark red! Is this possible, or is it a random bush that has been growing secretly for a long time? If so, how does a sport occur?
