16. Daisy used to love car rides!

Most exiting time of the day. Front or back seat: she refused to sit and look out the window, always had to stand. Even when the muscles in her back legs started weakening, she would be sliding around in the back seat. It would drive me nuts, and of course she ignored my commands to sit.

Finally she lost the use of her back legs altogether, and I got her a doggy wheelchair. We still had great rides and walks, but then her front end started to weaken and she couldn’t sit up. She got depressed and car rides lost their magic.

I should have probably put her down at that point, but she wasn’t in pain and her mind was so sharp and active. One day a light bulb went on: I folded down the back seat and put an old child proof stair gate on some empty water jugs. That plus her beds stacked on top brought her right up to window level. Every day for the next 7 months we would go for a long car ride, and she loved it. I would lift her out of the car on her bed and we’d lunch in the park or go for kayak rides in the St. Laurence river. With a doggie life jacket on, of course. I wish I’d gotten that jacket years earlier, I actually got Daisy swimming and we’d go for “walks” in the water on a hot day.

God, I miss that dog.
