including clerical errors by licensed dealers can get up to ten years (which is why the guns/cars analogy is absurd). Of course, few people actually get that, and ten years is over the top and should be reserved for violent felonies. Felon in possession is a mandatory minimum of five. The guy that sold the Son of Sam killer the revolver got five years for interstate sale without an FFL (the killer was a NY resident. The seller was a TX resident)
