... it's important in New York State to cross-register your handguns with a family member. Then the police have no right to take them in the event of your death.

By the way, this has always been the law. It just hasn't been enforced. Pistol permit data has never been updated either. When some "crusading journalist" got the brilliant idea to put the entire database online a few years ago, Eleanor Roosevelt was still on the list.
