If you are venturing into coyote territory, a gun is a handy thing to have. Otherwise, a big stick should suffice. I've never been attacked by coyotes, but have been attacked by domestic dogs. I was attacked by 2 boxers in a park. They came straight at me going full tilt. Fortunately, I had a weighty SLR camera, which I swung vertically and caught the lead dog hard under its jaw. The second I caught in the same place with my left foot in the same place. A goal kick.
Now, I carry a big stick when out walking or hiking.
