If a criminal wants to attack and kill, rob, rape or beat a citizen, he will be able to do it with the knowledge that his victim will not be legally armed. The criminal's safety will be purchased with the blood of his victims.
This is similar to the case under discussion. If the police had been unarmed, he easily could have been killed, and quite possibly the woman he was giving a ride to.
And after all, given a choice between a dead police officer and woman and a dead attacker, wouldn't we all prefer that the criminal attacker survive? Given a choice between a dead schoolteacher or secretary and a dead mugger, wouldn't we all prefer the mugger survive?
This is one of the moral principles of gun controlat least your version of itprotect the attackers of decent folks at all cost. If necessary, sacrifice the lives of the intended victims, be they police officers or citizens, but protect the criminal.
