are different than high profile college and pro sports in the US. The Bronze developed an intrinsic worth that predated big time US sports. In high profile US sports we don't have losers brackets (unless you count the football college national title where teams who don't win their conference still get in). The FCS football schools don't have consolation games either.

Here is an interesting article about the 3rd place US men's basketball team in the 2004 Olympics.
