I guess I was speaking as someone who understands how people become believers but also how they can eventually become non believers. Or skeptical at best.

They are somewhere in the comfortable middle rather than "head first, all-in" believers.

They are believers with what is preached until he gets to the point where the human psyche says, "wtf? Naaah, that's not how it is."

i.e. Never lose your ability to trust in your own moral compass. Never hand it over completely to someone else.
