'... just as Mars comes into view right next to it." Ummm, Mars rose a little while before the Moon did, and, if you have reasonably clear skies, is going to be visible all night: before, during, and after the eclipse.

As I type this, the eclipse is about halfway to total, and the part of the moon that is in the earth's shadow isn't particularly red. Perhaps it will look much redder at totality.

December 21, 2012, there was a lunar eclipse and the moon almost disappeared from view during it. Quite bizarre, as I've seen a reasonable number of eclipses, and if I hadn't been going in and out of my house to watch it that night, I would never have been able to locate the moon in the sky at totality.
