I remember that day. I was home sick with strep throat and there was nothing to watch on TV so I watched the inauguration.

The juxtaposition of the decent, salt-of-the-earth Carters on one side of the podium with the designer-clad-movie star Reagans brought me to tears. The contrast was a foreboding that I have only recently fully come to understand.

I will never forget that day.
