(45,251 posts)because he did not want to be beholden to big donors. However, he has always behaved in Congress and voted like a Democrat. He has been praised as an asset to Democrats by Howard Dean, when he was head of the DNC and by Charles Schumer, when he was head of the DSCC. Democrats don't bother running anyone against against him. In fact, he's been the nominee of the Vermont Democratic Party several times, even though they know he will not accept the nomination.
However, he also said that, if he ran for President, he would not run as a spoiler. Do you think it would have been better for the Party if he had done a Nader?
As for as convenience, poster please. Do you really think it's been less convenient for him to run as an Indie all these years, rather than have the DNC behind him? In what universe is running as an Indie for anything easier than running as a major Party candidate?
