the person who had the majority of the pledged delegates. Look back and you will see that the first mainstream mention of superdelegates possibly putting their thumb on the scale in favor of a person who narrowly loses the popular vote happened in the wake of super Tuesday - the day HRC had been expected to become the defacto nominee - instead she and Obama were essentially tied in delegates and the next wave of states more favorable to Obama. That was when that idea was put out. Obama surrogates, including Kerry and Kennedy, argued - not that they would work to get Obama more superdelegates, but that it would be wrong to overturn the pledged result. Note, that their appeal to fairness was not really altruistic, but based on the fact that if HRC got 50% of the pledged delegates or more -- there would be absolutely no talk of Obama getting enough delegates for him to win.
