A decade ago I was a contract software engineer. I think the main pressure was from Microsoft but they wanted to expand the H1B visas to bring in cheap software people from India and Pakistan.
Many of my friends I had met from different parts of the country, especially one guy from Virginia, talked about training the H1B guy who would be taking over their job. My friend in Virginia said that the month he got laid off there were about 3,0000 new H1B visa workers in Virginia. He knew this because there is a government website where they are required to post the numbers.
