Competition does expose the best from the weak but the 20+ debates exposed all their candidates as weak, and it exposed the party for what it is - scared, racist, and built on distraction.

The good side of the debates was the free publicity. The bad side was that they had to start in fighting and they had too much time presenting a bad product (all of them).

The byproduct of the debates was that because they were free no-cost self promotion campaigns (Newt and Cain) were extended and made to look relevant.
