2016 Postmortem
In reply to the discussion: Well, clearly the Pope is no longer a factor [View all]That Guy 888
(1,214 posts)38. There are a lot of reasons I'm not a Catholic and that article hits a lot of them.
I never said that Pope Francis is perfect, just that he's the best Pope in my lifetime. Unfortunately he still thinks, among other things, that women shouldn't be ordained into the Priesthood, members of the clergy shouldn't marry, anti-choice, etc, etc, etc.
As far as Pope Benedict goes, like a lot of religious leaders, he could sound reasonable on occasion(sharing money with the poor and hungry, condemning violence against gays) talk is different than actions. I don't know why he resigned, but he was one of the senior Vatican officials who "handled" child molestation cases. As I understand it, usually by covering it up.

That view was echoed by David Clohessy in the US, executive director of SNAP (Survivors' Network of those Abused by Priests), an organisation with 12,000 members: "His record is terrible. Before he became pope, his predecessor put him in charge of the abuse crisis.
"He has read thousands of pages of reports of the abuse cases from across the world. He knows more about clergy sex crimes and cover-ups than anyone else in the church yet he has done precious little to protect children."
Jakob Purkarthofer, of Austria's Platform for Victims of Church Violence, said: "Ratzinger was part of the system and co-responsible for these crimes."

Appears some of the posters here prefer David Brock to Pope Francis. That says a lot.
