If everyone votes in the same standard method, with the same access to the polls, then the total popular vote would mean something. As long as the processes are different, like auto-registration/vote by mail, contrasted with a three step caucus, requiring travel and repeated attendance for hours, then cobbling the "vote totals" together and calling it a valid result will always be a problem.
It is called method error. You do not combine data collected by radically different methods in that manner. In a meta sense one could perhaps combine the weighted percentage outcomes with a big caveat for limited reliability, but you cannot combine the raw #s for a vote total. It just is not statistically valid.

No one has won the nomination. There is a only 283 pledged delegates separating them.
