His running as a Democrat was a tacit pro ise to endorse the primary winner, and he knew better than any of us what a long shot his candidacy was. If that wadn't enough, he and Clinton both explicitly pledged to support the primary winner. To paraphrase the old joke, they've just been dickering over price. I don't mean a price for endorsement, but rather the laying out of a common message in detail. The platform is a written commitment to ideals, but the candidates have doubtless planned their assault together and have gotten to know each other better.

This was no mere month-long drama.
