19. From the seldom heard part of Hillary's "basket of deplorables" speech:

...but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they're just desperate for change. It doesn't really even matter where it comes from. They don't buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won't wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they're in a dead-end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well."

If, instead of apologizing for this(!), she had said something along the lines of, 'Yes, some of Trumps supporters are deplorable, but what I was trying to get at was that we need to reach out to the other half who feel left behind in an economy where the income & wealth is concentrated in the upper echelons!'

She should have hammered that point - that she wants to reach out to the other half (and everyone who is marginalized by the system) - loudly & proudly.

Apologizing for the remark makes no sense. If you believe, as is verifiable that roughly half of his supporters are racist, or homophobic, or xenophobic, whatever-phobic; then why would you want to apologize for calling them what they are?

The sad thing is that she didn't say this to her rank & file run-of-the-mill supporters, it was said at a high dollar fundraiser in NYC, attended by many celebrities, with ticket prices starting at $1200.

WaPo says her campaign & the party and joint fundraisers spent $1.2 billion, I'm struggling to see what good it did.
