More specifically the Bill of Rights, which includes the Second Amendment, guarantee certain personal freedoms and imposes limits on what the United States government can and cannot do. For example, the First Amendment prohibits the government from enacting any law that abridges freedom of speech. Similarly, the Second Amendment provides that the right to "keep and bears arms" "shall not be infringed" by the government. According to the Supreme Court, the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to own a firearm, subject to certain restrictions (which have not been fully delineated).
