He sicced the National Guard on students at Berkeley as governor of California.
He claimed that trees caused more pollution than cars.
He fired members of PATCO, an air traffic controllers union.
He got involved in a stupid Mid-East conflict, and when that blew up in his face, he invaded a tiny Carribean nation.
He honored German war criminals at Bitburg Cemetery.
He constantly disparaged the poor and the disadvantaged.
His trickle-down voodoo economics doubled the national deficit in just 8 years.
His environmental policies sucked big time (James Watt, Anne Gorsuch).
He made off-the-cuff remarks about bombing the Soviet Union.
His attorney general, Edwin Meese, commented that "of course all suspects are guilty, otherwise they wouldn't be suspects".
He raised income taxes on the bottom income earners, while reducing taxes on the top earners (from 70% to 28%), and reduced capital gains taxes as well. He also increased the FICA payroll taxes on the bottom earners.
He followed the Kissinger Doctrine of overthrowing left-leaning Latin American governments.

In short, he was, and still is, the holy icon for conservatives.
