(1,336 posts)The problem stems from the widespread belief that socialism equals communism, and every time I hear pundits talk about it, they only ever use the word "socialism". they perpetuate the long-touted trope that socialism means that your rights or freedoms will be taken away from you.
If the majority of Americans would understand that many of the the "freedoms" you so admire and cherish are overshadowed by the fears that you live with (or might end up living with) -- including bankruptcy due to hellishly high medical bills, or the ability to walk down the street without packing a gun, or sending your kids off to school fearing for their very lives, or driving over a bridge wondering if it might collapse -- then you might just start considering some policies that benefit both you and your fellow Americans, than just yourselves.

I live just across the river from New York state. Last time I crossed the river was just over two years ago. I feel safe here walking in my neighbourhood any time of night and day, and knowing that Canadian border security confiscates all weapons before my New York or Ohio (or any other state) neighbours are allowed into my country. During the summer, about every 10th car in my town has American license plates, BTW.
That's freedom. And I know that most DUers are in favour of stricter gun laws -- so apologies if I've offended anyone here.
