Couldn't you also say that individuals that haven't changed, for decades, their ideas or strategies for making progress, even when new information or data come in, and societal change, "in stasis or dying?"
Are you saying that's the only way "to elect a leader that has some new tendrils entwined in the grass roots?" To continue your analogy, don't forest fires also give invasive species a chance to get a foothold and replace native plants that would otherwise flourish?
I know there are people that get their backs up when 'the establishment' is used as a negative way.
Here's a way to turn that frown upside down: think of establishment as the good roots of a stable plant.

Those referring to "The Democratic establishment" in a negative way, aren't portraying the Democratic Party as "the roots of a good stable plant," nor could getting rid of experienced leaders be called "pruning."
Some plants have suckers, or throw out new shoots, or you can even clone them!
The established plant, in the great cycle of life needs its wanderers or its species dies. The system we have now is in need of wanderers.

Suckers, shoots and wanderers originate from the established plant itself, don't they?
The biggest argument was over running as a Democrat. Over and over, Bernie Sanders said he didnt want to. Hed spent his whole life purposefully outside the Democratic Party. He treasured his status as the longest-serving independent in Congress. Running as a Democrat wasnt who he was. He didnt want to do it that way.
His longtime consultant Tad Devine and the rest of the group came down hard: this is never going to have a chance of working unless you get over it. Suck it up, they told him.

Excellent misdirect. The conversation was about Sanders not being a strong woman advocate.
