My son got a speeding ticket for going 5 over, and when he told me about it, my first reaction was fear. He recounted everything, including that he had been super polite and the cop treated him in a professional manner. No problems at all.

Then he said it was a good thing that he had just had a haircut, so he fits right in this small town. From my sons' experiences here, cops and drug users always talk to them when they have long hair. They think my sons are drug dealers just because of their hair length.

But what struck me was how my fear was misplaced. Encouraged by the many times I've read about (and viewed) police mistreatment of non-white people.

My son is white! Yet I still remind all of my sons that the name of the game is to be polite and respectful, and to set their phones to record if they are pulled over.

Better safe than sorry.
