That's a common theme. The frontrunner attracts much attention and anything remotely negative is always amplified.
They went for Biden the moment he announced.

I also disagree with the following opinion:
"The two most important roles for journalists during political primary season are to cull the herd of the weakest candidates and take their best shots at the frontrunner, to test his or her readiness for the general election. That's a public service for the political ecosystem. "

But that stance explains the partisan mindset of the author.

If I were to vote in a presidential
primary today, I would vote for:
