(22,756 posts)personal concerns, struggling to get by financially, healthcare concerns, insurmountable student loans, awareness of environmental issues, victims of racism/sexism/etc...and/or just strong ideological beliefs... my research and personal observation shows that people vote on emotions, not so much on policy/pragmatism... the media/marketing is a strong force in affecting opinion... example, suddenly support for Buttigieg has shot up just from a couple tv events...
Bernie supporters are no different than others... Bernie supporters "who would not have voted for Hillary regardless" didn't have to vote for Trump... but 12% did... another approx. 10% voted for "someone else" and a few other percentage didn't vote...
I vividly remember the dissatisfaction with Obama (even here on DU) early on... that was when pragmatism, common sense and unity would have helped... I remember responding to any number of unhappy people on this site towards the 2010 election saying, "John Boehner"... Democrats not entirely happy with Obama and not voting (or making a protest vote) gave us a Republican majority and the inability to get many of Obama's positive ideas/policies through... so yes, I hope we can figure this out...
I like Bernie, I believe in his ideology... I think the General, though, will be difficult if he wins the Primaries and I think many of the people that support Bernie do not understand the need for pragmatism at times and the give and take of living in a complex society
primary today, I would vote for: Joe Biden
