Feinstein Slams House Democrats For NRA Deal
Source: Huffington Post

The introduction of new campaign finance legislation in the House has met with mixed reviews owing primarily to the disclosure exemption added for the National Rifle Association. But despite the criticism expressed by a host of good government groups -- some of which have begrudgingly said they would support the legislation -- the effort didn't seem to be in much political peril. Until now, perhaps. On Wednesday morning, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Cali.) became the first Democratic lawmaker to publicly come out against the NRA deal.
______________

Statement from Senator Feinstein:

'I strongly oppose any special exemption for the National Rifle Association in the DISCLOSE Act. The purpose of this bill is to make sure that elected representatives are not beholden to special interests, yet here is special interest # 1 receiving a deal to exempt it from an otherwise very good bill.

This is bad policy. The law should apply to the NRA, just like any other group. If the NRA, or any similar group, is going to spend millions on political ads, the American public has a right to know who is funding them.

The bill is the DISCLOSE Act, not the 'Everyone Except the NRA DISCLOSE Act.'

The NRA claims they need an exemption to protect their First Amendment rights, but that argument simply doesn't hold up. The Supreme Court has stated clearly that although all are free to speak and advocate their positions, when a group runs ads for and against candidates, disclosure requirements are appropriate.

1. Agreed.
In addition to having a right to know who is paying for the ad, we don't want the NRA to become a straw man for every right-wing nut case organization out there. What would prevent the religious right or the oil industry from giving to the NRA so the NRA could run right-wing ads for them?

41. Agreed. This is the end of the campaign finance bill. Already the WH is "dealing" this to death like
healthcare.

Watch the deals get worse and watch the White House cave in more and more.

The DLCers in the White House never saw a cave-in to the right that they didn't love.

Watch the GOP "moderates" suddenly reveal that they are still not satisfied and that they have to make still more demands.

And watch Obama give in to them.

I thought they and their members were proud to be NRA members and 2nd amendment supporters.

At first glance, I often confuse Feinstein and Feingold mixed up. And so I assumed it was Russ Feingold. Nice surprise.

Gun regulation is Di Fi's one Liberal passion. Otherwise she's generally DINO.

Well except for some environmental issues. One of which i worked on and she co sponsored. She's not all bad....

But usually she's bad.

13. Tell that to Harry Reid
and other Democrats who have an NRA 'A' Rating.
It is intellectual dishonesty to pretend they won't support anyone, Democrat or Republican who is in favor of RKBA.

They also support a handful of Blue Dogs. Again, a very popular group among liberals.

Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 06:29 AM by Kolesar
That's what Ohio gun supporters have backed.

The mayor of Cleveland knows better what is needed to protect lives in his city than does some pasty-faced whitey legislator from right wing suburbia.

57. Not necessarily ...
The NRA is a single issue organization and the single issue is RKBA.

You may not realize that the NRA supports Democrats who support RKBA.

In my area I received a call from the Democrat running for state office in my area, Leonard L. Bembry, and the call began by describing how the candidate supported gun rights and pointing out how important gun rights were for people in northern Florida. Bembry has a "A" NRA rating and of course he got my vote. He a good man and a great representative.

Another example is Bill Richardson the current Governor of New Mexico who ran in the Democratic primary for President.

The National Rifle Association official wasn't sure he correctly heard the reporter's question over the clatter of gunshots from the firing line.

"You said the NRA is a traditionally left-wing organization?" Dwight Van Horn said, incredulously repeating the question.

The gun rights group - traditionally not a left-wing organization, to answer the question - lent its endorsement Monday to Gov. Bill Richardson, a Democrat.

For governor.

Richardson may not need the boost, as he is well ahead of GOP challenger John Dendahl in polls and campaign financing.

But as he mulls a run for president, Richardson's history of close relations with the NRA could set him apart from other Democrats seeking the party's bid.

As Richardson noted, he's not the first Democrat to receive an NRA endorsement.

"But there haven't been very many," he said.

Others have tried to court the so-called sportsman vote. John Kerry took reporters along on a hunting trip during the 2004 presidential election, though it may have been footage of the Massachusetts senator's windsurfing expeditions that stuck in voters' minds.

The NRA endorsement, announced Monday at a West Mesa shooting range where hundreds of law enforcement officers from around the world took part in an NRA-sponsored shooting championship, wasn't the first time Richardson has garnered the group's backing.

"He's been a pretty solid guy on the gun issue," Van Horn, a member of the NRA's board of directors, said.

Whether that record could woo pro-Second Amendment voters into the Democratic fold in a national election is another question.

"He has treated us first class," said Kayne Robinson, NRA's executive director for general operations. "What the implication of that will be in national politics is beyond my pay grade."

A news release announcing the endorsement cites Richardson's support for a law that allows New Mexico residents to carry concealed handguns with a permit.

Richardson said he has earned a concealed-carry permit himself.

"I am not packing today, though," he said, "because I have plenty of State Police officers here to protect me."

You can review the NRA ratings for politicians in 2006 at this link:

http://www.votesmart.org/issue_rating_detail.php?r_id=3492

Notice that the NRA does give some Democrats a high rating.

Obviously Republicans often get higher NRA ratings but that is merely because Republicans have wisely cornered RKBA as their issue and many Democrats have foolishly supported draconian gun laws. Gun control is a losing issue which has cost our party many important elections. In many close elections, Democrats have lost because of their stance on gun control.

The tide is working against Democrats on the gun control issue. It's time to stop shooting ourselves in the foot.

Note this map for concealed carry of firearms.

And this map of how concealed carry has spread through our nation.

None of the states that have passed "shall issue" concealed carry have found a problem with the law that is serious enough to overturn the law.

Many feel the Supreme Court will overturn Chicago's draconian gun laws later this month.

Also notice that since states have passed laws that favored gun owners the violent crime rate has fallen significantly. This may not prove that more guns = less crime as that fact may be caused by many factors such as better policing. But still over the years the number of firearms in our country has increased dramatically. Therefore, it would be logical to say that more guns does not equal more crime.

Note that this graph does not come from the NRA but from the DOJ.

51. Feinstein is a bit of a hypocrite on the gun control issue.
On one hand, she's stated her support for the outright banning of firearms. She once stated that, if she had the votes, she'd introduce a law tomorrow requiring the immediate seizure of every gun in America. Her political stance isn't just anti-NRA, it's among the most strongly anti-gun in Congress.

On the other hand, she's a trained in firearms use, has a CCW, and has admitted more than once that she carries a gun in her purse and that her bodyguards carry firearms.

"I know the sense of helplessness that people feel. I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms... I made the determination that if somebody was going to try to take me out, I was going to take them with me." - statement by Diane Feinstein in a 1995 Senate hearing

She definitely has a "some people are more equal than others" position on the issue.

as it appeals to her base.

Unfortunately it damages the party nation wide.

But the object of any politician is to get reelected.

In many areas of our country Feinstein is despised. Unfortunately it reflects poorly on other Democrats and causes many gun owners to vote only for Republican candidates. Sadly, they fail to realize that Republicans will sell them out in a heartbeat.

73. Perhaps you should check Obama's record on guns. He is strongly anti-gun.
Obama’s Gun Views

FACT: Supported ban on concealed carry; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-4jqZSEo0Q

FACT: He voted for 2005 Kennedy Amendment Intended by Kennedy to ban all common center-fire rifle ammo. Kennedy, in his speech named the .30-30, first made in the mid 1890s, as a cop-killer to be banned. The .30-30 is one of the most common hunting rounds in America. Reference to Kennedy’s speech, Congressional Record: http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgibin/getpage.cgi?dbname=2004_record&page=S1634&position=all

“Another rifle caliber, the 30.30 caliber, was responsible for penetrating three officers’ armor and killing them in 1993, 1996, and 2002. This ammunition is also capable of puncturing light-armored vehicles, ballistic or armored glass, armored limousines, even a 600-pound safe with 600 pounds of safe armor plating. It is outrageous and unconscionable that such ammunition continues to be sold in the United States of America.”

A ban on the .30-30 would have banned ALL common hunting ammunition. Since Kennedy wrote the amendment, and since he specifically named the .30-30, then we must assume that he did intend to ban the .30-30, and ALL hunting ammo.

Obama voted FOR the amendment.

FACT: Obama voted AGAINST the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act of 2005

FACT Obama supported a ban in Illinois on semi-auto guns

FACT: As a state senator he voted against a bill that would have given amnesty for a person who used a gun in self-defense, even if it was illegal for them to have the gun. In New York, Goetz was about to be mugged by four young men. He shot them all, none fatally. The jury accepted his claim of self-defense (The evidence was overwhelming.) but he was also charged with having a concealed weapon illegally and was convicted of that. The Illinois bill would have granted amnesty for gun possession if the gun was used in genuine self-defense. Obama said, “NO”.

FACT: On his website he supported permanent reinstatement of the so-called Assault Weapons Ban.

You clearly cherry pick my posts - I post in support of the 2nd Amendment, but NOT in support of idiot gun owners and rabid OCD gungeon posters. However the only post of mine you appear to remember are the ones that stir your shit.

There are sane people in the gungeon, I don't believe you are one of them. Travis, the difference between discussing and compromising on a point and "backing down" appears to be lost on you. Give me one clear example of what you think "backing down" is, as opposed to discussion.

Now about my physical prowess - that's all for real, and I'm not some fat ass wannabe chung mucky duck strip mall "martial artist" with a beer gut and pretty gi's with flourescent belts. I've been doing American style full contact kickboxing the past thirty years, the same way some people eat. Part of my Type AAA+ nature, I like to spar. It requires no judgement, and I am quite sure of my self. Anyway, any situation in which I might not be sure of myself is not one I'm likely to survive anyway, and that situation is not you or Euromutt, I promise.

And finally, for extra credit in this lesson: I don't care if you're carrying your gun. Why should I? You just won't be carrying it at my business nor will you be carrying it anywhere on property that I own or control. Get over it. I support your right to carry a gun anywhere else that's legal to do so.

So what was your point again?

it has supported the GOP while blaming the Democrats for anti-gun legislation that does not really exist...the NRA lives on fear of gun confiscation, something it creates out of thin air and the few truly anti-gun Democrats in congress and pointless and stupid laws they occasionally propose.
Every time an idiotic law such as New York's Microstamping bill is enacted, the NRA makes a fortune and develops a new source of income for many years to come.

32. Thank you, Mark.
You have explained the NRA situation perfectly. Freepers still believe Obama is going to take their guns away.

44. ...and the NRA thrives on their fear..that the NRA creates and some
Democrats unwittingly help them justify.
This has been going on for decades, and it is the NRA's goldmine, just as the NRA is the goldmine for the anti-gun organizations...

There's some on this forum.

78. Actually Obama is good (from our perspective) on gun rights
He's made it clear that his own preference is to have much more restrictive gun control laws, and he's also been very clear that he doesn't think it's Constitutionally or politically feasible.

Obama, remember, said that in his opinion the 2nd Amendment protected an individual right before Heller.

Now, IMO progressive House members need to find better uses for their time than writing draconian new assault weapons bans that everyone knows will never make it out of committee. However much they may mollify part of our base, they inflame the GOP base much more.

88. They will also inflame a large part of his leftist base. It is amazing that this
body that has such a hard time passing useful legislation even consider such pointless nonsense...but we are talking DC here, so we should not be surprised.

80. The NRA is representing a special interest: the weapons industry
And they have a huge budget with which to do political campaigning. The gun control movement has no such wealthy patron(s).

89. The "gun control" groups have lots of wealthy supporters - they
were founded by Republicans in almost every case and continue to be run by republicans. They use fear to solicit funds and use lies to generate fear - they have more than enough money to do their evil work, bu tthey want more money and power-they also manage to influence quite a few politicians despite their "poverty"...
They are not a "Movement"-they are businesses.

33. The only time the NRA has ever been a respectable organization...
... was when its letters stood for National Recovery Administration. But that was only for a brief period while FDR was still president, a few life times ago.

24. Kick ass and take names, Dianne.
I hope this has legs. Most of the workaday world cares not a whit about the workings of our government. The only time they are interested is when it directly benefits them. Other than that, these sheep put their heads in the sand and vote like their Mommies and Daddies before them, if they bother to vote at all.

It must have been so hard to find him like that.

72. Only a few days after Jonestown, too
Edited on Wed Jun-16-10 06:27 PM by Recursion
That must have been a very traumatic time in SFO, and Milk was a great American. I saw the memorial to him in the Castro when I was there this winter. It's very moving.

Milk's killer, however, was a cop, which should remind us that any scheme which leaves only police officers armed is probably a bad one.

95. DiFi's political career was BUILT on Musconi and Milk being murdered
Edited on Thu Jun-17-10 11:59 PM by ProudDad
She was on her way out the door when Dan White's 38 Special made her mayor...The downtown developer's choice...

Another good reason to hate fucking handguns!!!

It was a sad day for S.F. in more ways than one...

Followed by sad years for California when DiFi the Dino began occupying space in the Senate...

She's republican-lite...always has been...always will be...

Only on guns, gays and Choice has she been anything resembling a Democrat...on damn near everything else, she's been bloody AWFUL!!!

97. She set us back 10 years with her bogus ban in '94
Because of anti-gun nuts we lost both Houses and Clinton couldn't get anything passed from '95 on, not to mention he was impeached. Time to pick another topic, because you lost this one.
