America's new homeless

Elizabeth Schulte reports on how a growing number of families are finding themselves hungry and homeless in cities across the country, according to a new report.
Text

The survey, based on reports from 27 major cities across the U.S., found that three-quarters of them reported an increase in family homelessness. The rising number of families out on the street was a striking number, even as several cities reported that rates of individual homelessness had stayed the same or even declined.

Denise Jourdain, recently laid off from a non-profit organization, described going to a Catholic Charities food shelf in Minneapolis to apply for food stamps, after putting it off for three months. "The fear of not having enough food" drove her there, she told a reporter. "What if I don't have a job at the end of the month? I have to do this."

Is so mad at Wall Street that he is going to have a full one hour meeting with the Wall Street crowd that did this to us.

2. MSNBC.com yesterday had a pictorial of a man being evicted from his apartment.
Edited on Tue Dec-15-09 02:36 PM by AndyA
He had health issues and had lost his job. The sheriff showed up and literally woke the guy up in bed. His belongings were moved outside to the parking lot and dumped in the snow. The man literally had only his car and the clothes on his back.

He collapsed or something and was taken away in an ambulance. Two neighbors were there trying to help, and his sister is looking for housing for him.

It's sickening. I was in tears because of this man's pain.

No rush on health care or jobs, folks...no rush at all...

It's sickening.

Here's a link to the slideshow. Warning: It's very, very disturbing.

4. We the people need to stop waiting for the government to help...
It is obvious they do not give a shit about us.
We need to come together and help each other and stop waiting for these assholes in Congress to do their job..because we will die in the meantime waiting on their asses.
Americas economy is the new "Katrina" and we (Both the lower and middle classes) are going to be left to die, sink or swim.
We must help each other or we will all be doomed if we try to go it alone.
A house or nation divided cannot stand.
Come together America..we are all in this boat together.

12. That is a good post.
You're spot on - this is another Katrina - except it is not just the poor in New Orleans, it is the middle incomed becoming poor and the poor becoming poorer.

8. Why are we sending billions to other nations again?
We need to start taking care of our own.

10. Are you suggesting
that we rescind our membership in the U.N.? Don't we have an obligation to help others around the world as well? Yes, we have people here who are suffering, but to suggest that we help people here first sort of suggests that they are better or deserve better than other people in other countries. I think we have enough to help everyone.

14. God helps those who help themselves, even if they aren't American.
We need to put Americans first.

17. Sorry we don't.
The American taxpayers also have a right and an obligation to take care of their own and America first!
If we are not strong here at home..we cannot help the rest of the world.
We are not the police of the world.
We are not the rulers of the world.
We are not the caretakers of the world.
We can help the world best by working on ourself and helping our own first. Then and only then should we also pay to help other nations.
If we destroy ourselves as we are doing right now..we cannot stand as a Nation.
We are divided and we are dying.
We need jobs.
We need health care
and people deserve a roof over their heads and something in their belly after a hard days work.
